A Late Review for the Movie Sucker Punch.

I just copy pasted this review from my FB.

Review : Sucker Punch....Oh and one last thing.

I've watched Sucker Punch last night with a friend of mine in Gurney Plaza's GSC. The sofa wasn't as comfy as the one in TGV and the screen size leaves much to be desired...BUT the movie did gave us what they promised. It was like a sucker punch to the gut.
The scenery and shooting camera angles made this a wild ride, along with the addicting sound tracks and deep colours. The effects weren't that breath taking considering other films like Inception, Matrix and Wanted, already took 'Action' to a whole new level, but Mr Shibuya added an element called 'Anime' in it and we both enjoyed the cliches we could find in the show.
Sailor Fuku, Babes with guns, babes with swords, babes in heels and fish net socks...pig tails, twin tails, tsunderes...what's not to like here?
Okay so the only seasoned actor here is Scott Glen, though he didn't over play his character(The wise old men in all those quest stories) he did gave us that 'I know something you don't and I'm shoving it in your face' feel...just how I lik...e it.

The girls had their own history of acting and I felt they did quite well despite the thick make up. With some time, they might be the ones to take up the future 'babes of the screen' mantel that Megan Fox can't ever compete. (Seriously I hate that girl)
The Doc and Caretaker did great supporting parts. Especially Blue Jones...he gave me that disgusting vibe every time he's on screen. It's a love hate lust combo for his part and I get chills whenever he's there with the girls. Not over play...ed, not under played...just the right balance of acting. Dr. Gorski was awesome as the powerful instructor and uh...'Old-Whore', two different but strikingly similar characters to play, and you can still spot the difference.

The Sound track is there to help with the mood...and trust me, this movie could just sell soundtracks and make some money. They're really interesting and fit in with the scene, loud punk, electro trance, slow and sassy beats, some heart thumping ones and a sad ending. Yup, if the graphics won't get to you, the soundtrack would at least drag you in for the ride.
Okay spoilers : The story is about a girl who was orphaned, and wanting tor protect her sister from her step-father, but accidentally killing her... Well, she was framed and taken to a psycho-ward and the warden was bribed and ordered to gi...ve her a lobotomy. She tried to escape by having vivid image dreams to make her strong. Her friends helped her and while it was a bittersweet end, the journey was what makes us stuck to the seats.

What I like about the movie : Giant mecha, Guns, Swords, babes, Sailor Fuku, SCOTT GLEN! Soundtrack, Nice Fighting Angel(Compared to the crappy camera work in The Expendables, this one was clear cut and you could see every angel), Oscar Isa...ac's acting, Unexpected Ending and many more...

What I don't like : Some plot holes are there. The boundary between the 'dream world' and 'reality' was so blurred and unexpected. It's a double edged sword here. Some might like it and some might not. I have no problem with it, but the fact that it made it hard for the audience to like it made this a weakpoint.

The show didn't drag its foot. It brings us straight to the action. It leaves out the cheesy love story cliche and fluffy girl chat in most movies nowadays(Well of course, since it's a Dark movie) and I can feel the pa...in from Sweet Pea when she lost her sister. That was a really touching scene there...and the chef...looking at his face..will surely make you think of that kitchen scene. I believe the director had made a 'Kubrick' moment there...

The Lobotomy scene and the after scene really made us curious of what happened to her. They even censored it...(So you know I'll get the uncensored one later) and strategically covered her face until the last moment. Some might say that her acting needs work as she gives that bland, clueless look on her face...but you must know this my friends. She just had a massive trauma, and even though it seems like she should have a long time to get use to it, it's only been 5 days. She's also the underdog here. She's the trigger, she's the pebble. She still has that innocence about her to help people.

That is her strong point and also weakness that Blue exploited. She managed to lead a gang to break out. Through out the show she grew stronger as 'SCOTT GLEN! (OMG)' gave her instructions and advises to overcome her mission. She's like Shi...nji Ikari in Evangelion. He has his ability to Synch with the Eva and she has her dance. The end she even said that she's not the star of the show.... The impact of the ending was literally a sucker punch to the gut. We get the satisfaction that Blue and the Step father get whats coming to them, but feel sad about her sacrifice. They were right as Sweet Pea was the only one strong enough and mentally stable enough to survive everything. Her goal was to live her life for all the girls that sacrificed their lives.

Scott Glen at the end was predictable and yet still surprising....hehe wonder what might happen if they made a fanfiction out of it.

So that's my review of Sucker Punch. Like it, hate it....it's up to you. For me, I enjoyed the ride with my friend and we had fun watching it. It gave us some surprises here
and even though there were some WTF moments there, you tend to over look it since it's a dreamscape...who wouldn't imagine themselves fighting orcs, dragons, driving a mecha, killing nazis...(okay maybe not the last part) and doing... breath taking stunts when they want to escape reality? We play games, we go online, we talk with friends...but she doesn't have that luxury. All the time spent in the asylum are spent trying to escape. It's logical that she had to find a way to keep her sane enough to go through her plans.

This might be like a fan boy rant but seriously, re-watch the movie and you'll find something that you like and something you overlooked. Granted you learn something from the one-liners....(It's better than Never Say Never, I guarantee it.) It fully set the bar for future movies that's gonna be like this (Previous ones that gave me similar feeling styles are Sky Captain, 300, Spirit, Sin City etc.)

Oh and one more thing.... It's gonna be waaay better than JB's movie.
